Programs & Services

IntelliHealth takes the stress out of making it to an appointment by bringing the treatment wherever it's needed.

Throughout our lives we are faced with change and the resulting effects on life around us. Change is a regular part of our daily life. There are times however, where change is the result of a major life transition and our ability to adapt to the new environment is beyond our skill level. Therapy offers individuals or families a process to work through what this life change means. Often when faced with a change we look for ways to incorporate this into the life we are leading. In the case of a major life transition, counseling helps to determine how the life we are leading will adapt to this foundational shift. Your counselor is here to help identify these issues and the other adjustment issues as you move forward through the many life transitions that help to create the person we are today.
The specific conditions and situations that IntelliHealth treats are as follows:
  • Depression
  • Anxiety Disorders
  • Anger Management
  • Behavior Problems
  • Grief & Loss
  • Memory Loss
  • Transition & Adjustment Disorder
  • Post-surgical Mental Health Care
  • Chronic conditions including but not limited to Cancer, Cardiovascular and Pain
  • Drug and Alcohol Dependency
An adjustment (transition) disorder occurs when an individual is unable to adjust to or cope with a particular stressor, like a major life event. Since people with this disorder normally have symptoms that depressed people do, such as general loss of interest, feelings of hopelessness and crying, this disorder is also sometimes known as situational depression. Unlike major depression however, the disorder is caused by an outside stressor and generally resolves once the individual is able to adapt to the situation.

Adjustment disorder may also be acute or chronic, depending on whether it lasts more or less than six months. If the adjustment disorder lasts less than 6 months, then it may be considered acute. If it lasts more than 6 months, it may be considered chronic. Diagnosis of adjustment disorder is quite common; there is an estimated incidence of 5–21% among psychiatric consultation services for adults. Adult women are diagnosed twice as often as are adult men.

TREATMENT
Often, the recommended treatment for adjustment disorder is psychotherapy. The goal of psychotherapy is symptom relief and behavior change. Treatment allows the patient to put his or her distress or rage into words rather than into destructive actions. Individual therapy can help a person gain the support they need, identify these abnormal responses and maximize the use of the individual's strengths. Counseling, psychotherapy, crisis intervention, family therapy, behavioral therapy and self-help group treatment are often used to encourage the verbalization of fears, anxiety, rage, helplessness, and hopelessness. As prescribed by the patient’s physician, sometimes small doses of antidepressants and anxiolytics are also used in addition to other forms of treatment.

In addition to professional help, family and caregivers can help their relative with their difficulty adjusting by:
  • offering encouragement to talk about his/her emotions
  • offering support and understanding
  • reassuring the resident that their reactions are normal
  • communicate with family members to with updates on the resident’s progress
  • assisting residents in making simple decisions, such as what show to watch on TV or what activities they enjoy most, etc.
  • having the patient engage in a hobby or activity they enjoy
  • encouraging residents to engage in assisted living activities
  • As these situations effects family, significant others, treatment and counseling are not only directed towards residents, but also involve the patients family, close friends and care-givers.

For these transitional situations and adjustment disorders, IntelliHealth offers an awareness program, baseline and ongoing assessments and individual and group therapy for residents.
IntelliHealth health care providers that are State of Florida Licensed Clinical Psychologists or Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) trained in mental health therapy and counseling performs baseline initial assessments. These standardized assessments identifies individuals that may have an adjustment disorder at the time of assessment or are deemed to be “at risk” to develop one. Individual treatment plans will be developed by the LCSWs. IntelliHealth providers will work collaboratively with the resident’s physicians and community staff.
IntelliHealth creates awareness of its services through a variety of methods including (but not limited to):
  • Community presentations directed to residents and families
  • Educational initiatives directed to facility staff
  • Informational fliers for facility marketing
  • Newsletter information
At the time of initial assessment, individuals will enter therapy (if appropriate). After obtaining consent to treat (either from the resident directly, from their guardian or POA), therapy will either be performed on an individual basis or in a group setting or both. Treatment will be ongoing as deemed appropriate by the therapist.
An optional, yet recommended, element for this program is that IntelliHealth, with cooperation from the IntelliHealth Advisory Committee, will create a marketing data initiative that would examine the effectiveness of the program. This would be accomplished through a pre and post questionnaire.
